Finger Lakes Lavender Festival 2010...SUCCESS!

Gary and I awoke at 6:00am Monday morning still on a lavender high. We grabbed a cup of tea, sat in the gazebo overlooking our lovely lavender field and reflected on the last two glorious days. We welcomed over 1000 visitors this weekend to celebrate the love of lavender. Sharing the love we have for the farm and our lavender with so many people has been a dream for us. Seeing the enjoyment and the smiles of our quests has given us the encouragement to continue to grow.

Enjoy the show!

We especially want to thank all of our visitors, volunteers and artists. As we take the next step in improving this event their ideas and encouragement are so welcomed. In the following weeks I will be posting pictures of our event and information that so many visitors have requested on growing, caring and crafting with lavender. So become a follower of our site at http://www.lockwoodfarm.blogspot.com/ for more information.

You don't have to go to Provence to be in a field of lavender.

We are just days away from the 2010 Finger Lakes Lavender Festival.  And the lavender is in full bloom.
Join us for the essence of lavender.

Topiary artist, Michelle Masters will be appearing on Sunday, July 11th during the festival

Living in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York, topiary artist Michelle Masters left a promising career in computer graphic design in order to pursue her creative roots - painting. After a year of painting her love of gardening and growing things found their way to the paper and her first watercolor and ink topiary hat was created. Soon after many designs and collections grew but the first hat "Lady Lavender" has remained one of her most popular designs and is also featured as her business' identity. Michelle's clever images are clean, simple, uncluttered and well designed. The topiary line although whimsical and fun is based around a casual upscale style and is a perfect gift idea for nature lovers.

Michelle has designed this years Finger Lakes Lavender Festival poster and our Skaneateles T shirts.  They are available to purchase during the festival and every Saturday and Sunday when out lavender market is open.

Watercolor artist, Kathleen Schneider will show and sell her work during the festival.

Kathleen Schneider is a self-taught artist who enjoys the creative process as much as the finished product. Primarily a watercolorist, she finds life's simple pleasures, people, gardens, landscapes, and still lifes that all tell a story, her favorite subjects. Her style reflects the work of two contemporary painters she admires: Charles Reid for his painting of light and fluid washes, and Ray Hendershot for his texture and detail, and also impressionist Mary Cassatt for her passion for her subjects. Kathleen feels a deep sense of satisfaction when someone is drawn to her work. She and her family presently reside in Camillus, New York where she maintains a studio.

Skaneateles artist, Jan Fairhurst will be appearing on Sunday, July 11th during the Lavender Festival.

I've been making and selling stoneware pottery for the last 15 years using the old kick wheel my father bought me 30 years ago to promote an entrepreneurial spirit. I keep thinking I should upgrade to an electric wheel but I love the control I get with my own legs and besides, every time I'm kicking away I think of my dad fondly.

My stoneware pottery is practical and functional, yet I try to create graceful lines with each piece. I relish the earthy quality of stoneware clay but my work is lighter than much of the pottery you often find.

Workshops offered at this years lavender festival!

Our Royal Velvet plant sale to benefit the Skaneateles Historical Society was a big success.  In selling the plants we have shared our knowledge of growing lavender with those gardeners who purchased plants.
Anyone who would like additional conversation we will be offering a workshop on how to grow, harvest and prune lavender during our lavender festival at 10:00 on Saturday and Sunday.

We will also be offering a workshop on how to make lavender wands at 2:00pm on Saturday and Sunday.  Ribbon, lavender and materials are available for $5.

Artist, Kathy Horth appears at this year festival

I have a very patient husband, Jim, and two wonderful children, Michael, 15 and Molly, 13. I work at Oswego County BOCES and paint part time.  My husband jokes that I will paint on anything that doesn’t move! I’m trying to figure out how to work on moving objects… He is also very indulgent by stopping at yard sales; there is a lot of good “canvas” at yard sales.

I started painting nearly 20 years ago as a hobby, and now I find myself fantasizing what it would be like to paint all day. I hope to develop a website soon, and maybe a small catalog, to offer my services to a larger market.

We welcome local jewelry designer, Cindy Petters to the lavender festival.

The next artist we are highlighting is local jewelry designer, Cindy Petters from Hidden Pond Farm.  We love her Farmgirl Sass style and new gem stone Samba inspired jewelry.  Cindy has appeared in Where Women Create and CNY magazine.

Cindy and her husband, Dave are great friends.  Cindy pitched in when we needed help during last years lavender festival.  I look to her for inspiration and direction, she so "gets me".

Local artist, Christy Lemp will be appearing at this years festival.

Once a week we will be highlighting one of our artists appearing at this years Finger Lakes Lavender Festival.

Local artist, Christy Lemp and I met at my friend, Cindy Petters annual Valentine's Day Tea. We got to talking about my farm and her love of painting landscapes.  Of course I invited her to spend some time on the farm to take pictures.  She came during our lavender festival last year and produce this lovely basket of lavender.

She has agreed to allow us to reproduce the illustration for our volunteers Tshirts this year.

Make sure you check out Christy's original paintings, prints and notecards.

Local watercolor artist, Christy Lemp
I have a love for the everyday sights: a neighbor's tulips, pumpkins on the porch, a gorgeous sunset, birds in the backyard, a mother snuggling her child. There is a certain energy in these moments, especially in the early morning or late afternoon light, that the transparency and looseness of watercolors really convey.  Capturing the simplicity of these fleeting impressions is my daily passion.  Life is full of goodthings.  Enjoy!

The third annual Finger Lakes Lavender Festival will be held at Lockwood Farm on Saturday, July 10th and Sunday, July 11th from 9:00 - 4:00.  Last year we welcomed over 400 visitors to our festival.  Visitors enjoyed cutting and gathering bouquets of our lavender while leaving the hustle and bustle behind, learned how to grow, harvest and dry lavender.  And enjoyed the sights of Skaneateles Lake and relaxed - that's what lavender is know for!  Accompanying the festival this year is the sale of Royal Velvet lavender plants with a portion of the proceeds going to the Skaneateles Historical Society, refreshments and a juried art show.

If your interested in participating as a artist vendor, please email us photo's and a description of your work.  Each artist will be juried on quality and originality and will notified by May 21st.

Vendors are responsible for a canopy tent and any set up needs. Electricity is not available.

Vendor Fee: The booth fee is $35.  No refund for rain, event proceeds rain or shine.
